The world is a fantastic mystery

β€œThe day you teach the child the name of the bird, the child will never see that bird again” – Krishnamurti

For a young child the world is a fantastic mystery.

Until it learns everything about problems. Until it learns problem solving. Until it categorizes and divides. Until there are words.

Until it learns who it is supposed to be. How it all works.

Until everything is a mere symbol in its head.

Until it stops looking at the world with fresh eyes.

Until all the wonder is hidden under a pile of thoughts.

Until it takes itself for all its problems.

Until it asks itself, what is missing, when nothing is missing.

Until it takes the symbols for what is. Until it is obsessed with problems and does not stop thinking.

It has that nagging feeling that it can not solve the problem of life. It really makes not that much sense if it thinks about it.

Until live is something really threatening that must be resisted. Because life doesn't work how it thought. The master plan failed.

When you are this child: Open your eyes again and really look.

The fantastic mystery was never lost. It can never be lost. It is just this.

You are just life. Life lives you. Relax.

Don't waste your life on problems. Don't waste it on words. Be a part of it. Enjoy the big mystery.

And if you see me doing something else: smile and wake me up.

Arguing with life

If you are in an argument with life, life wins! Every time. Take it lightly and be a good looser.

About time

Imagine there were no days. And no time.

How would you feel about problems in the future?

How would you feel about the past?

What would be you're story without a past? Would there be a story?

Who would be you without time? Would you even be?

What would be true? What would be false?

Would you even think these questions? Would there be any questions?

Can you find the answers in time? If there are answers?

Or do you have to just know them? Now.

Simply being

You have everything you need - right

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present. Babatunde Olatunji

This is a reminder for myself.

Live can be simple and beautiful. If you do not complicate it.

You have the sun, you have something to eat, you have a warm and cozy place to sleep you can walk outside and enjoy the beauty of it all.

If you think that you need more, you pay a price. More becomes less.

You buy ice cream and become fat. You get a car and have to work for the bank. You buy cheap food and ruin the planet. You think other people do wrong stuff and try to change them and become unhappy. You try to fix yourself, when there is nothing broken.

Don't forget that life is simple, if you can accept what is already given to you.

Change what you can change

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Reinhold Niebuhr (1892 – 1971)

Life is full of problems. Haven't you notice? You can spent you're whole energy and creativity on fixing them.

Here are a few examples that you might encounter as a programmer:

  • Your team does not test code
  • You want to use Git but everyone else just feels fine with SVN
  • No department speaks to another one
  • Scrum sucks

I had quite a hard time trying to fix all these things only a few years ago. It was quite impossible for me to "fix" these things in my team.

Do not try to change people

This is my advice: Do not try to change people.

It sounds simple. But it isn't easy to do it.

Start with yourself

Here are a few examples:

Example 1: Everyone else uses SVN and you want to use GIT

What you can change today is use git-svn. It is not perfect, but you can commit as often as you like, squash commits and only push quality code into SVN.

You don't have to ask anyone. Just do it. Be patient and wait. Someday some other colleagues might use GIT. Tell them about git-svn. Before long you all might use GIT.

Example 2: Your team does not test code

And what about you? Do you really test-drive or test code? No? Then why not start now. You don't have to ask for permission. If you believe it's what professionals do then do it. Today.

If there is a point to testing, then someone might notice. If there is no point to testing you might notice.

Example 3: The deparments do not speak to each other

Speak to another department. Invite a colleague that you don't know to lunch. Are you willing to do this? Are you willing to do this weekly?

Are there colleagues that might be willing to do it? Can they join you? Ask them πŸ™‚

Is there a question in your daily work, that only another department can answer? So why dont you not ask them?

This is something that you can do. Today.

Why is this more effective?

You can act now on these problems now.

You do not have to ask for permission to change yourself.

Why waste any energy on stuff that you can not do? It is absurd to change, if you think about it. It shows a lack of trust into your fellow programmers and why should they follow you? You are not doing it yourself?

Change yourself

The things that you can not accept in others, are a mere reflection of you. You can not accept them, because you haven't come to terms with yourself.

Try to change yourself.

You might not change the "situation" at all β€” but you will stop to be the victim. You will feel much better and in the end you might be surprised, that the problem just disolves over time.

After a few of these experiences you might even notice, that the biggest problem might have been you're perception of the "situation".

This is for the brave

Do not forget that changing oneself is only for the brave. It hurt's to see that all the bad things that we think "others" do, we do on our own.

Forgive yourself and through forgiving yourself, come to terms with others.

Beautiful isn't it?

A good day

The most important lesson

Looking for future happiness does not work so well.

Even if you reach it β€” it will most certainly not last.

You will get ill. People will not like you. You will have stress. There will be bad weather.

No matter how much you struggle, no matter how rich you get: You will not be able to hold on to your health or wealth.

Happiness now?

Why are young childs so happy? Why is the world such a marvelous place for them?

They like the packaging of your birthday present more than the present itself. You give them a leave and they are delighted. You show them a dog and the love it. You smile at them and they are happy.

Of course: Live for a young child is not only happy. But I think they can teach us an important lesson about happiness.

Children do not try to be happy. They just are happy.

They do not need anything for it. No money. No special moment. Nothing.

All our concepts about happiness are just a hindrance to achieve it.

If you embrace the current moment, you notice that it isn't only bad or good. It's both.

When I started to look I noticed something great:

Even if I have a "bad" morning β€” a moment later I see the sun through the office window and I am happy.

I am stuck in a train that does not move for 10 minutes, then I notice a loving mother and a happy child playing. And I am happy together with them.

When I walk through storm and rain to work I listen. It sounds marvelous. It smells marvelous. Yes it's cold and wet β€” but what a great show. It makes me happy.

This is the same happiness that you have when you climb on a mountain and look down and you have this "wow" feeling. You stoped thinking. You started looking. You are happy.

You can be happy

The lesson is this:

Every time you think a moment is bad: Embrace it.

The resistance to it often hurts much more then the just being with it.

Stop thinking. Have a good look around you. Try to feel you're body and take a few deep breaths.

Be here. Now. Not in the past, not in the future. Because otherwise you will just miss what makes you happy.

You have everything you need for happiness. Right here. Now. Stop looking for it somewhere else.

Do you know the difference between a good working place and a great one?

Everyone cares. Not only management!

Everyone brings in his or her unique talents.

People challenge each other to become better human beings.
